Former Cincinnati running back Rudi Johnson has died.
According to his family, Johnson passed away just after midnight on Tuesday.
Police cited his passing as suicide.
Johnson had reportedly been dealing with mental health issues for a while. He also struggled with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).
Johnson played seven seasons with the Bengals. In September 2008, he signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions.
After his NFL career, Johnson led a philanthropic life. He continued to focus on his non-profit that he started in 2005, the Rudi Johnson Foundation, to help fund scholarships, school supplies, hot lunches, and youth programs for underprivileged kids.

The Bengals released a statement regarding Johnson’s passing on their website.
“Rudi was a fine person and an excellent running back for us,” said Bengals president Mike Brown. “He was dependable and productive as a player, and very popular among his teammates. Everyone liked him and saw him as a dear friend. We are deeply saddened by his passing.”
