Video footage was recently released of an elderly resident stabbing the manager of a retirement home in Miami Beach, Florida.

83-year-old John Gula attacked Amelia Sola-Ortiz multiple times with a pocket knife on August 4 around 10:45 am. The shocking incident occurred just after having a conversation with Ortiz about failing a property inspection due to the state of his apartment at Rebecca Towers.

Both Ortiz and Gula’s girlfriend, who was present during the conversation between Gula and the manager, attempted to stop him.

Ortiz was eventually able to retrieve and toss the knife down the hall.

Gula tried to pull out a second knife to try to stab Ortiz from behind as she walked away. She was able to safely make her way into a nearby apartment, where she was able to call the police.

Meanwhile, Gula hid in another apartment before officers arrived.

According to an officer who arrived at the Miami Beach scene, Ortiz was “profusely bleeding from the head and chest area with what appeared to be a stab wound to the torso.”

Fortunately, while Ortiz was heavily bleeding from the attack, she survived. She received treatment from a trauma center for extensive injuries and is recovering from surgery.

Gula is currently being held without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center in Doral, Florida—a half hour away from Miami Beach. He has an upcoming court date set for November for a second-degree attempted murder charge.

Gula is a military veteran and has no other criminal background.

Property managers of Rebecca Towers have not released a public statement about this incident at this time.
